Degrading Kashmir - No more a paradise
June 18, 2007 by Pareen
“Our friends told us that Dal is extremely beautiful, surrounded by snow-clad mountains, and houseboats lend uniqueness to it. Unexpectedly, a visit to its interior areas made us weep on seeing polythene, carcasses of animals, and drains flowing into the lake”. These are the words of a German and an Austrian tourist who came to visit the Dal lake in the so-called ‘heaven on earth’ - Kashmir.
I have concluded that the ecology of Kashmir is degrading. Why this conclusion? I have enough news to prove it! But that is not all. One of my close relative had been there in 1984, and again in 2006. He said he could not believe the changes that have taken place. I believe him!
Reason for this degradation? Pilgrimage, deforestation, pollution, ignorance and lack of attention - of the people and the government of Kashmir.
Tonnes of trash dumped in Indian Kashmir during an annual religious pilgrimage pose a serious threat to the region’s water supplies and flora, environmental groups warn. The trash is dumped during an annual trek to a shrine in the Amarnath cave, 3,800 meters (12,800 feet) up in the Himalayas, which is considered an abode of the Hindu deity Shiva. Read the full pilgrimage stupidity here.
I thank the British for taking away the Kohinoor diamond. We Indians have systematically and successfully destroyed every great thing that we have/had or are fighting for it.
And I am damn sure Kohinoor too would have been an issue today - or maybe we would be fighting with Pakistan for Kohinoor instead of Kashmir, who knows.
