OVERALL MUSIC (Ta Ra Rum Pum)
Now, with lyrics from Javed Akhtar and music by Vishal-Shekhar, I would expect all the songs to be smash-hits. But it doesn’t seem so. Two songs (’Hey Shona’ and ‘Ab to forever’) are not worth listening to at all. Music is melodious and can be listened to over and over again, but the combination of Lyrics and Music works only for the Title song, Nach Le Ve, and of course the best one - Saaiyan Ve.
One thing that I would appreciate is that there are no remixes in this album.
WHY DID HE DO THIS?
Javed Akhtar’s contribution to the songs could have been better definitely. Boss, what is this Cheeka Cheeka (in ‘Ab to forever’)? We Indians want something that we can understand. Definitely not many of us understand Spanish!!! Music is ‘rocking’ in this number too. But the lyrics are “very” mediocre, and by Javed Akhtar’s standards, ‘very poor’.
I know this post is not for TaRaRumPum’s music review. But, Javed Akhtar and Chica Chica? I cannot simply understand why this song’s lyrics seem like I have written them?
I am not ever saying that Javed Akhtar is a bad lyricist. Just this song is far below what he could deliver.
SAAIYAN VE
Ironically, in the same album, there is this song where he has created what I believe very few writers could create. It sounds like any other song when we listen to it. But once you hear the song in the movie, I can bet you will start loving this song more than any other in this album (where two more songs are worth listening - above average - but not extra-ordinary).
This song Javed Akhtar can “proudly” claim to his credits. Awesome lyrics, very well sung by Vishal, and very well placed in the movie. The placement of this song in the movie would make many cry - definitely.
The most important thing one can realize is that this song makes you feel sad at one point (during the antara’s) and fills you with courage/inspiration at some other points - especially when “Saaiyan Ve” is crooned.
Nonetheless, I wonder what would be the outcome had Kailash Kher sung this one. Anyway, with a touch of the title track’s music in the background, Vishal’s Sufi style rendering is simply superb, says Vijay at Moviewalah.com. I agree.
This song has a perfect blend of western music and Indian singing I feel. Tell me if you feel the same after listening to it.
This is a song on ‘life’ and how it is. The lyrics seem all the more beautiful and appealing to me because there is a dearth of such lyrics in Indian music industry. In this year, there has been no song with “great” lyrics yet. Words have been wrapped in a way that anyone who ‘understands’ them can relate to the song. What else but this ‘is life’!

Although I have provided a link to the lyrics, I cannot resist quoting some lines. Here they go…

Ik Banjaara Iktaare Par Kabse Gaave; Jeevan Hai Ik Dor Dor Uljhe Hi Jaave; Aasani Se Girhe Kulti Nahin Hai; Mann Vo Hatila Hai Jo; Phir Bhi Suljhaave; Raahi Ka To Kaam Hai; Chalta Hai Jaave…

A traveller for so long sings along with an ektaara (one stringed musical instrument); Life is a thread, the thread carries on becoming tangled; Eclipses do not release so easily; The heart is such that; Even then it will unravel; It is the travellers work; He carries on walking…

Now it seems I’ve got to see this movie!
maybe u dont know how to appreciate music fully but ‘ab to forever’ is a good song, and ‘hey shona’ is a beautiful, and romantic song. ok so he has the ‘chica chica’ in the one song, but its not like in the whole song. many songs have been having spanish lyrics lately. so just because of that, its not a bad song.
and ‘hey shona’ is a beautiful, and melodious song. maybe if u took the time out to listen carefully to the lyrics, u may not be saying that.
im not trying to get up on u but i just wanted to say that those two are different types of songs, and they too gotta be appreciated. but i will agree saaiyan ve is one of the best songs!
Hi Sheel,
I agree that I am a little thrifty in appreciating things. But that is because I only want to recommend anything - be it music or movie or anything else - only if it is well above average. If you browse through my posts, you will notice that I have made recommendations only when I am sure that my fellow travellers (or anyone in general) would like them. I hope you’re getting my point. I don’t want to recommend each and every thing that I (personally) like.
Now, coming to the Saaiyan Ve post, I want to tell you that when I started writing, this post was meant to be for that song only. But for readers who are not quite in touch with Bollywood, I started off with stating facts, and then an overall view of the album. But while writing about the album, I could not resist writing about my disappointment with Javed Akhtar. Then, of course came ‘Saaiyan Ve’.
About ‘Ab to Forever’, I would say that I was not reviewing the song. I personally think that the music is good. But, the lyrics - as I said in the post and I repeat - were far below what Javed Akhtar could deliver. That is all.
See, when someone reads on my blog that Javed Akhtar has written that song, he would expect certain level (for obvious reasons). I did not want that.
Secondly, I don’t feel it is anywhere better than most of the songs ‘produced’ in Bollywood. All I am saying is the song is mediocre. Mediocrity is not bad, but not very good either. Hence I’ve said, not-worth-listening.
And Chica Chica is unwanted - I felt. If it appeals to you, I correct my words and say that “some people may still like it that way”.
And finally, Spanish may be used by some lyricists, but I feel Javed Akhtar’s use of deep rooted pure Hindi is what makes him what he is today. Take example of any of his very good compositions from Lakhya, Mangal Pandey, Pukar, Swades, Veer Zaara, any of the old ones or even Ta Ra Rum Pum. We both agree that Saaiyan Ve is the best one. I feel it is because of that touch of Hindi that only a few lyricists in India are able to provide. Tell me if your views differ on this.
Coming to Hey Shona, I would apologize for saying that it is not worth listening. It is worth listening. It is a melodious song, great music, great contribution by Shaan and good use of Sunidhi’s voice (I still cannot believe it is Sunidhi Chauhan) to sound like Rani Mukherjee’s original voice.
But, I would add, very mediocre lyrics - and any song is incomplete without that. A typical romantic song straight from Bollywood factory. Sheel, I heard the song carefully but couldn’t differentiate it from any other ‘normal’ Bollywood song (could rate it the same as ‘Its the time to Disco, or ‘Whats going on’ from Salaam Namaste. They too were mediocre melodious songs lacking attention of the lyricists). And I was trying to be intelligent and trying to forget that however mediocre these songs may sound, they still appeal to ” We, The people” - though we may forget them after few weeks.
I feel ‘we both’ would be in a better position to tell whether a particular song was good or mediocre after a month (after thinking if we still remember it or whether it has been lost in the crowd of thousands of other songs).
Anyways, Thanks for taking time to respond. I hope you liked the posts. Do provide feedback on any other aspect of the blog too (Criticism/Suggestions/anything).
I appreciate that you spent time to show my where I went wrong.
Your feedback is the single most influential factor in shaping this blog.
Keep sharing.

Mahendrap,
I didn’t review the movie but it is worth watching. Definitely above average - some may find it excellent (I did).
Tell me whether you liked it or not.
hey well i can definitely see ur point better now that u have explained urself, more clearly from the original post. ‘ab to forever’ could have been a bit better but the overall music i thought was nice. as for the chica chica thing, i dont know i guess i kinda got used to it since so many movies now how foreign language lyrics. (ex: shabd, murder, etc). hindi’s also not my first language so when i watch movies in my language, now they always have foreign stuff! but i also see ur point w/ older movies, and the pure hindi lyrics.
and as for ‘hey shona’.. yea its definitely personal taste. i dont know i felt like it was different from previous songs, although the lyrics are usual sappy love lyrics.
saaiyan ve is def. the best and i love the bhangra beats in nachle ve!!
also i didn’t mean to come off too rudely yesterday.. now that i look back at what i wrote, it looks mean.. haha. didn’t mean for it to be that way! sorry! allright well catchya later. bye.
hey
hey I definitely see what u are saying in a better perspective now. I didnt ming the foreign lyrics in to ab to forever only because I guess I have gotten used to them from many different movies. i.e.; shabd, murder, etc. also hindi is not my native language, so now, even in my language, foreign lyrics is quite common.
as for hey shona, i think its a beautiful song, yet it is not too different than many of the love songs that have come out before. for some reason, i still feel its very pretty–although the words could have been a little different that the norm.
but i do think saaiyan ve was most likely the best one in the bunch. the words, the beat, everything was good. and also the singer’s voice was perfect for the song, cuz the guy had a distinct voice.
im sorry, i didn’t mean to come off rudely before. i read my previous comment over and i feel like it didn’t come out the way i thought it would.. aha.
as for the overall movie, i think its one of the best movies ever made. it didn’t circle around love as normal theme, it incorporated many family elements, and it actually had a message for all the audience!
take care, bye.
hey, after reading your review on ta ra rum pum (TRRP) music and specially even i felt a deep urge to see the movie and have finally seen it and i must say its a great great movie majorly because it has depicted the very simple lessons of life in a very nice way. there are some cliche moments but yet i loved their presentation. what struck me the most was the last scene it was very obvious that he was going to win but the way it is shown was really nice. also, sheel, i understand your feelings of the song “he shona”, actually even i find it very sweet despite its mediocre lyrics. i think its the simple and lovely way it has been sung and presented that is endearing. i hope we get to see more of such sweet movies..and saaiyan ve was the icing on the cake, one of the few most touching songs i have heard recently and also sung very beautifully and convincingly..hats off to TRRP
I finally saw the movie this past weekend - the movie was ‘above average’ for my taste. The melodrama and expected cliches could’ve been vastly tuned down. But I understand that these are the things that make movies work with today’s audience.
Anyway, coming to the point regarding Saiyaan Ve, yes I liked the song and the lyrics. I am a great fan of Kumar Gandharva’s rendition of Kabir’s Nirguni bhajans. That sufi style of lyrics and music is the backbone of Saiyaan Ve, with addition of modern instruments like guitar.
More importantly, not just the music, but the essence of the lyrics is also very much in the Nirgun style. It doesn’t worship a form, or ‘deity’, but extols universal truths in simple folk language in a ‘formless’ or Nirgun fashion.
Hi Mahendra,
I dont know anything about classical music (I hope thats what you are talking about), but yes I too think that the lyrics and sufi style voice were the backbone of the song. And mixed with all he modern instruments, it only adds to the beauty.
And hey Sheel, I think we more or less agree and both enjoy the songs.
And hey, I did not feel you were rude. Its good that you said whatever you felt. A healthy discussion benefits all. And besides that I would say, do criticize. That will help me a lot.
And we can continue…
Keep travelling…
Hi Pareen
You’re right - it’s sort of semi-classical…
Photo, or no photo…keep writing!
Best regards,
Mahendra
