Enlighten - World’s Greatest Movies

WHAT?

 

Experience 100 specially selected World’s Greatest Films on the big screen, throughout the year, every Sunday - without digging too deep into your pockets - all out here in our very own Mumbai.

 

The idea is to screen the greatest films the world has ever seen. We would screen films of all genres. Right from All Time Masterpieces never seen before in India on the big screen, to contemporary cults, action, comedy, romantic, drama, foreign language films, animation, documentaries, great commercial successes, children’s films, compilation of short films from all over the world, Oscar winning films and much more.

WHO?

 

Enlighten Society, an NGO dedicated to the cause of spreading good cinema by screening great National and International films, which was started by two very young creative minds. “We are looking at an entertaining form of cinema, which is true in itself. Cinema that can touch that common chord in everyone’s soul without the boundaries of time and space”, they say.

“The duo hopes to provide a welcome break from commercial déjà vu. More so because many people “aren’t even familiar with Indian movies” that fall in the poetry-on-celluloid category, let alone be exposed to those created by people from startlingly-different backgrounds”, as quoted in Mid-day, 13th April, 2007.

 

WHAT TO EXPECT?

You can catch a flick a week — from filmmakers like Majid Majidi (Iran), Akira Kurosawa (Japan), Steven Spielberg (USA), Satyajit Ray (India), Alfred Hitchcock (UK), Vittorio De Sica (Italy) and Ingmar Bergman (Sweden), among others — every Sunday morning, for a year, at five Cinemax theatres across Mumbai

 

Plus, members can participate in interactive sessions with creative artists and technicians from the Indian film industry; their press meet had contemporary filmmakers Farhan Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap talk on the award-winning Bicycle Thieves (Ladri de Bicyclette).

 

As of now, they have got rights for 52 films (for 1 year), And it seems they are still working on other 52!

I have put this under the tag of Festivals. This is indeed a Festival for people like me who die to see well-made films and have no way to see them on big screen in India, and that too at a cost of 15 Rs. per movie!!! (as against Adlabs where they looted thr public by charging 250 - 500 rupees per movie during their Oscar Fever Week).

 

Especially in India where theatres screen movies only which are acceptable to mass audience, and where we can only hope to see this type of movies on CD/DVDs, this is a boon. All thanks to Pranav Ashar (19) and Jimmy Mistry’s (24) innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
